Abstract

Introduction. Differences in the level of social and economic development of the territories are largely objective and are associated with the uneven distribution of natural resources, the peculiarities of geographical and climatic conditions, the degree of development of the territory, and it is impossible to completely overcome them. The task of public administration is to mitigate such differences, therefore, it is necessary to have a clear idea of the economic potential of each region, its economic dynamics and role in the single economic system of the country. The article is devoted to the characterization of the contribution of the Republic of Mordovia to the development of Russia.

Materials and methods. Historical, systemic and critical approaches were used in the work. The study was carried out on the basis of official statistics using the resource approach and methods of structural and dynamic analysis. A tabular method was used to present the results obtained.

Results and discussion. The article characterizes the natural resource potential of the Republic of Mordovia, which underlies the development of key sectors of the economy. Analysis of the share of the region in the main all-Russian social and economic indicators made it possible to assess the contribution of Mordovia to the development of the country: not having a developed natural resource potential and experiencing objective limitations in the development of industry due to the lack of strategic minerals and remoteness from large deposits of raw materials, the republic contributes significantly to the development of the country in the following areas – the production of freight cars, steel and iron castings, lighting products, cable products, agriculture. The contribution of Mordovia to providing the country’s population with medicines and medical equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic is also characterized.

Conclusion. Increasing the role of the Republic of Mordovia in the development of the Russian Federation is possible by strengthening the economic potential of the region. Priorities in this regard are the development of pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, the production of materials for optoelectronics, modified polymers, glass products for various purposes and products for solar energy.
