Abstract

Introduction. The article deals with the little-studied issue of transferring traditional Mari silver jewelry to the Defense Fund. The authors state that the main problem in studying this issue lies in the insignificant source base. In this regard, the purpose of this article is to identify groups of sources, characterize them and highlight their features.

Materials and methods. The empirical base of the work is archival documents, periodicals and field research. The main information on this issue is provided by field materials recorded during expeditions in 2022 in the Zvenigovsky, Sovetsky, Volzhsky, Novotoryalsky, Sernursky, Paranginsky districts, as well as outside the framework of official expeditions in the Gornomariysky district of the Republic of Mari El.

Results and discussion. Traditional jewelry was an important part of the Mari folk costume, they performed various functions. Silver is the most common metal among the Mari. Traditional Mari silver jewelry, which is of historical value, became one of the contributions to the Defense Fund. According to the informants, family heirlooms donated to the Fund in the form of traditional ornaments carried certain energy, magical power and acted as an amulet.

Conclusion. As a result of the study, the features of the source base were identified. Their groups (archival documents and field materials) and levels of informative value are determined. Approaches to the further study of the topic under consideration are outlined.
