Abstraсt

Introduction. In the pre-revolutionary period, the settlement-housing complex of the Mordovians attracted the attention of many researchers. A number of articles in periodicals were published, which nowadays help us to understand many aspects of the material and spiritual culture of the Mordovians more fully and deeply, which determines the relevance of the chosen topic.

Materials and methods. In the process of the research the methods of historical and ethnographic science were used: comparative-historical, problem-chronological, historical-genetic and complex approach. General scientific methods were used: descriptive-narrative method, analysis, generalization. The sources for writing the article were materials of pre-revolutionary periodicals.

Results and discussion. On the pages of Penza, Nizhny Novgorod, Tambov, Saratov, Samara, Simbirsk provincial bulletins, magazines “Ethnographic Review”, “Mirskoe Slovo”, “Zhivaya Starina” and other publications we find a lot of information revealing many aspects of the ethnic culture of the Mordovians, including descriptions of their settlement and dwelling complex. Valuable ethnographic data on settlements, dwellings and farm buildings were left by A. Mozharovsky, K. Mitropolsky, P. Bogoslovsky, N. I. Maslennikov, N. N. Ogloblin, P. I. Melnikov (A. Pechersky), I. N. Smirnov and others. The issues of inheritance, property division, construction of dwelling and household buildings in the Mordovian customary law were highlighted by V. N. Mainov. At present, a large layer of pre-revolutionary periodicals has been studied. Some aspects of the topic were covered in the works of N. F. Mokshin, L. I. Nikonova, G. A. Kornishina, E. N. Mokshina, Y. N. Sushkova, L. N. Shankina, M. N. Romanova, M. I. Svyatkin and others. A significant contribution to the systematization of pre-revolutionary periodicals was the publication of a set of documents and materials compiled by T. M. Guseva.

Conclusion. Thus, the settlements, dwellings and farm buildings of the Mordovians in the pre-revolutionary periodicals were described in detail. Researchers covered their role in the traditional rituals of the ethnos, considered structural and structural-architectural components of the settlement-dwelling complex. Due to the fact that nowadays many aspects of material and spiritual culture are forgotten, information from pre-revolutionary periodicals helps to understand more deeply and completely the traditions and everyday life of the Mordovians.
