Abstract

Introduction. The article examines the main aspects of the creation and functioning of the Innocent Educational Brotherhood, created in Penza. The study of the missionary activities of the brotherhood made it possible to answer questions related not only to the formation of certain cultural practices, but also to the origin, growth, and development of public initiative in the Russian province.

Materials and methods. The research materials were documents of the Innocent Educational Brotherhood, published in the Penza Diocesan Gazette. During the work, the following methods were used: retrospective analysis, systemic and comparative historical.

Results and discussion. The creation by the Russian Orthodox Church of educational brotherhoods based on social principles is of particular interest in modern conditions, since it testifies, firstly, to the formation of elements of citizenship, and secondly, to the development of Orthodox and secular culture. In the second half of the XIX century. Representatives of the clergy, actively involved in the activities of educational brotherhoods, initiated the opening of various kinds of schools and libraries. Work with schismatics and sectarians living in the governorate was a systematic activity with the goal of returning parishioners to the Orthodox Church. The methods used by the members of the brotherhood were aimed exclusively at persuasion and education.

Conclusion. In general, it can be stated that religious public organizations played an important role in the spiritual life of Russian society; they expanded the cultural practices of parishioners, during the implementation of which a public initiative was born and developed.

Key words: clergy, civil society, religious brotherhoods, cultural practices, parochial schools, schismatics, sectarians
