Abstract

Introduction. The preparation and conduct of the All-Union Population Census of 1939 took place in rather difficult conditions. The organization of the previous census of 1937 was declared unsatisfactory, and its results were defective, since the established population was lower than expected. In this regard, it was decided to conduct the third All-Union Population Census in 1939, preparation for which was given particular importance. The purpose of this article is to study the organization of the 1939 census on the territory of the Mordovian ASSR.

Materials and methods. The research material was based on publications in regional newspapers on the organization and conduct of the All-Union Population Census of 1939 on the territory of the Republic of Mordovia. This paper used problem-chronological, historical-comparative methods, as well as the principles of historicism and objectivity.

Results and discussion. This article discusses the preparation and conduct of the All-Union Population Census of 1939 in the regions of the Mordovian ASSR. Particular attention was paid to mass explanatory work among the population.

Conclusion. The regional press was a powerful means of ideological influence, which was determined by the very nature of the Soviet state. The analysis made it possible to consider the role of the periodical press in the preparation and organization of the 1939 census. All regional newspapers reprinted materials related to the census from central newspapers, as well as published resolutions of local authorities.
