Literary and Art Magazines “Moksha” and “Syatko”: Their History and Role in the Formation of the Verbal Art of the Mordovian People

Katorova A. M.

Abstraсt

Introduction. The formation of fiction in the Mordovian (Moksha and Erzya) languages is closely connected with the development of periodicals, especially the magazines “Moksha” (the original name was “Valda yan” — “The Bright Path”, then “Kolhozon Eryaf” — “Collective Farm Life”) and “ Syatko" (“Suran tolt” — “Sursky lights”), the history of which, as well as their contribution to the rise of the spiritual ethnoculture of the people, has not been sufficiently studied to date. The main purpose of the article is to clarify the time and place of publication of the first issues of magazines, changes in status and structure, the names of responsible/chief editors, as well as to determine the sociocultural significance of these printed publications.

Materials and methods. The research materials were issues of the magazines “Moksha” and “Syatko”, published from 1928 to 2023, preserved in paper form, as well as digitized and freely available on the Internet. In the course of the work, cultural-historical, comparative-historical and systemic methods were used.

Results and discussion. The study of the identified problem showed that the journals did not arise simultaneously and not in one place, and changed their names, status and departmental affiliation more than once. During the Great Patriotic War they were not published; during the 10 — 11 post-war years, the almanacs “Syaskoma” in Moksha and “Iznyamo” in Erzya were published instead. The magazines contributed to the development of the spiritual culture of the Mordovian people as a whole, translation activities, the formation of standardized literary Moksha and Erzya languages, the genre system of Mordovian literature, the education of young writers, the strengthening of national literary criticism and methodological science.

Conclusion. The study showed that for the Mordovian people “Moksha” and “Syatko” are not just literary and artistic magazines, without which it is impossible to imagine a printed literary word, they are two sources, two treasuries of the verbal culture of the Mokshans and Erzyans, known far beyond the borders of the republic. Despite the fact that they arose at different times, were published in two related languages, their history and functions are largely similar, their role in the development of national literature is enormous.
