Abstraсt

Introduction. Regions are the initial link in the formation of achievements in the field of sustainable development of the country. It is difficult for our state to form the basis for sustainable development when there are over 80 territorial entities with different economic and social opportunities. In this regard, the study of the problem of finding individual mechanisms for each region that can guarantee their sustainable social and economic development in the near future is of great importance and is relevant. The purpose of the study is to find possible mechanisms to ensure sustainable social and economic development of the region for a long period.

Materials and methods.  As an object of study, the social and economic development of the region is considered on the example of the Republic of Mordovia. The research material was statistics data, official publications and analysis of literary sources on the issue. Abstract-logical methods, methods of statistical and economic analysis, graphic method, and systematic approach are used.

Results and discussion. The analysis of the social and economic development of the Republic of Mordovia made it possible to obtain an assessment of the state of the economic, social and environmental subsystems of the region — the current situation of the region does not meet the requirements of sustainable development. The key problems that need to be addressed in order for the republic to get out of the crisis and begin to develop were highlighted. The formation and implementation of a new development strategy are identified as a possible mechanism for achieving sustainable social and economic development of the Republic of Mordovia for a long period. Activities within each development area were proposed as recommendations.

Conclusion. The concept of sustainable development is a global concept, which in more than 30 years has transformed into a global instrument to solve current and future global issues. At the moment, there is no approved mechanism in Russia to ensure the implementation of the goals of the concept of sustainable development; accordingly, it is a difficult task to form such a mechanism at the regional level. Therefore, it is necessary to continue research on possible mechanisms for ensuring sustainable social and economic development of the regions.
