Introduction. The purpose of the article is to characterize the main central bodies of state administration of agriculture of the autonomous republics in 1937 — 1953. As an example, we selected the republics of the Volga region, similar in terms of socio-economic indicators, such as the Mari, Mordovian and Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics, whose economy was dominated by the agricultural sector during this period.
Materials and methods. In preparing the article, we used materials from the funds of regional archives, such as the State Archive of the Republic of Mari El, the State Historical Archive of the Chuvash Republic, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Mordovia, as well as a number of published collections of documents and reference publications. The processing of the material was carried out using general scientific and special research methods, including historical-comparative, historical-systematic methods, content analysis method.
Results and discussion. The article draws attention to individual government bodies of the republics, namely the Councils of People's Commissars (since 1946 — the Councils of Ministers) of the ASSR, the profile people's commissariats (ministries) that were subordinate to them and were responsible for the development of agriculture. Their functions and position in the system of power, as well as some problems in their activities are touched upon. The names of the state leaders of the agrarian sector of the republics of the given period of time when they were in office are given. The lack of independence of regional authorities, forced to be executors of higher decisions, is indicated.
Conclusion. This analysis made it possible to consider the republican agricultural management bodies and identify some features of the organization of their work. The materials of the article can be used in the study of the regional system of public administration of the Soviet period.
