The Housing Problem in the Logging of the National Republics of the Volga Region during the Years of Pre-War Industrialization

Voeikov E. V.

Abstract

Introduction. The article considers the main aspects of the housing problem in the logging areas of two national republics of the Volga region: the Mordovian and Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics in the 1930s — 1940.

Materials and methods. The source base for the article is the funds of the regional archives of the republics of Mordovia and Tatarstan, Samara and Ulyanovsk regions. The methodology of the article is based on the application of the comparative historical method and the theory of modernization.

Results and discussion. In the historical literature, the everyday aspects of the activities of forest industry workers have been poorly studied. Meanwhile, the availability of residential premises was an important condition for ensuring largescale logging that unfolded in the USSR in the early 1930s. Residential barracks at logging sites were built quickly, with numerous flaws. With the commissioning of new barracks at the logging sites of the Mordovian and Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics, the main problems became the condition of the dugouts that remained here and there, the presence of insects and the lack of bedding.

Conclusion. In general, it can be stated that the housing issue in the timber industry enterprises of the main forest trusts of the Mordovian and Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics was quantitatively resolved during the Third Five-Year Plan. However, there is evidence of a lack of living quarters in several timber industry enterprises of the Tatar ASSR, and of an insufficient amount of bedding for the purchased iron beds in the timber industry enterprises of the Mordovian ASSR. In some regions of the country, the situation with living quarters for lumberjacks in the 1930s was more tense than in the Volga republics discussed in the article.
