Political portrait of Count Alexey Alekseevich Uvarov

Kipriyanova N. V.

Abstraсt

Introduction. Any political leader reflects ever — changing political reality. The public image of a statesman consists of numerous fragments of social relations and types of behavior. Among the politicians of the late XIX — early XX centuries, Count Alexei Alekseevich Uvarov was a typical representative of a moderately liberal trend. The relevance of the topic is obviously the lack of works on his views and the urgent need for more active using of documents from regional archives to solve vital problems.

Materials and methods. The main research method was the documents of the Uvarov family foundation from the State Archive of the Vladimir region. The verbal reports of the III State Duma and the periodical press are involved. With the help of biographical and specific problem methods, a microanalysis of the political views of the deputy of the III State Duma, Count A. A. Uvarov, was carried out.

Results and discussion. There are no studies of the political activity of A. A. Uvarov in the historical literature. Reference books and general works contain brief biographical information and individual facts of the count’s activities in the Saratov province, as well as his speeches at Duma sessions. Modern literature does not reflect such important characteristics as A. A. Uvarov’s ideas about the relationship between crown structures and zemstvo institutions, individual rights, and options for solving the agrarian issue. The article attempts to reconstruct the political portrait of one of the representatives of the Russian liberalism based on the generalization of data from a number of sources.

Conclusion. A.A. Uvarov’s political ideas reflected his era — the situation of a national crisis in which society was looking for ways to transform. The Count was opposed to radical transformations. In the conditions of a long confrontation between the government and the liberal public, when both sides stopped listening to each other, he tried to promote the search for a compromise through the Duma rostrum.
