Abstraсt

Introduction. Modern forestry in Russia and its regions, including the Middle Volga region, has a number of problems related to the preservation of forests and their rational use. Under these conditions, foresters should undoubtedly take into account the rich historical experience accumulated by their predecessors — pre-revolutionary specialists in the field of forestry. One of them was the forester Martin Apollinarievich Kontsky. This article attempts to examine his life and activity, which were closely connected with the Mari region.

Materials and methods. The work carried out is based on the analysis of published historical sources and scientific literature, as well as previously unknown documents extracted from the funds of federal and regional archival institutions. The research was conducted on the basis of the principles of historicism, objectivity and consistency using ideographic, chronological, historical-genetic and comparative-historical methods.

Results and discussion. M. A. Kontsky, a forestry scientist, has worked for more than 30 years in the forests of Tsarevokokshaysky and Cheboksary counties of the Kazan province. In addition to fulfilling the duties of a forester, solving problems of rational forest management, managing a large team of forest guards, he also paid considerable attention to the creation of forest nurseries for growing seedlings and saplings of tree species; held the positions of forest auditor, auditor-instructor, conducted public activities, represented the interests of the forestry department in the zemstvo.

Conclusion. M. A. Kontsky was a recognized expert in the field of forestry. He made a significant contribution to the development of forestry in the Mari region in the late XIX — early XX century. He owned a number of innovations to improve the state of the forest industry, the rational management of forestry here, the organization of reforestation of felled areas and the fight against forest fires.
