B. E. Votchal: Biography Pages of the Outstanding Russian General Practitioner

Abstract

Introduction. Boris Evgenievich Votchal is a well-known Soviet therapist who made a huge contribution to the development of Russian medical science. As an employee of the Central Institute of Advanced Medical Training, he did a lot for the development of clinical pharmacology in the Soviet Union, revealing the difference between experimental and clinical pharmacology. B. E. Votchal created the world’s first Pneumomanometer, a device for studying bronchial patency disorders. He developed a fundamentally new technique for determining venous tone. In this work, based on the materials of personal file, Votchal (archive of the FGBOU DPO RMANPO), has been made an attempt to reconstruct the main milestones of the biography of Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Soviet Union, Professor Boris Evgenievich Votchal.

Materials and methods. The main source for studying the activities of the outstanding Soviet scientist B. E. Votchal was the archival documents of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education of the Ministry of Health of Russia. In his research, the author relied on the principles of historicism and objectivity, used comparative-historical, problem-chronological, prosopographic research methods.

Results and discussion. A number of works have been devoted to the study of this topic, mainly publications of doctors related to the anniversaries of the Central Institute of Advanced Medical Training. As well as a number of journalistic articles with memoirs about the work and life path of B. E. Votchal. But at the moment there is no research that reveals the declared topic in full. Based on the available archival documents, the author makes an attempt to summarize all available sources on this topic.

Conclusion. The creator of clinical pharmacology in the Soviet Union, B. E.Votchal, remained in the memory of descendants as a great scientist, brilliant therapist, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, creator of clinical pharmacology in Russia, head of the Department of 2nd Therapy of the Central Institute of Advanced Medical Training. The entire life path of B. E. Votchal was dedicated to the advancement of medical science. During difficult times such as the Civil War or the USSR’s war with the Fascist invaders from 1941 to 1945, as well as during peacetime, he dedicated himself to aiding seriously ill patients. Until his last days, scientific work, pedagogical activities, and medical practice remained the primary and fundamental aspects of Boris Evgenievich’s work.
