Annotation

Introduction. The perestroika processes, the collapse of the USSR, the aggravation of the socio-political situation in the regions, and the role of the print media in this attract the attention of researchers. In Mordovia, the confrontation between the ruling communist party and the democratic one that was replacing it became especially aggravated and entered an active phase of action in 1991, in which the newspaper “Mordovia” played a significant role. Identifying a reflection of the relation between government and society will make it possible to characterize the events of those days and comprehend the mistakes made in order to avoid their repetition in the future.

Materials and methods. The research material was the issues of the newspaper “Mordovia” for 1991 — the most revealing in terms of the struggle for power and socio-political transformations. The work used methods of content analysis, historical-typological and statistical methods.

Research results and discussion. The newspaper “Mordovia” is a product of perestroika. At the initial stage, financial assistance was provided by the Supreme Council of the RSFSR, headed by B. N. Yeltsin. The main goal was the fight against communist ideology. Editor-in-chief I. I. Kelin in a short period of time made the newspaper in demand by readers, taking into account the interests of different social groups and age categories. The recipients' attention was attracted by catchy headlines, cartoon drawings, quotes from speeches, and messages about the topics of upcoming issues. The newspaper published the most resonant materials covering pressing social problems: changes in government agencies, shortcomings in the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Supreme Court of the MSSR, etc.

Conclusion. The issues of the newspaper “Mordovia” for 1991 reflected the main vicissitudes of the struggle for power in the republic at its peak, when communist rule was replaced by democratic rule, V. D. Guslyannikov, little known to the bulk of the population, was elected President of Mordovia, with whom the people pinned hopes for the best. The newspaper made a certain contribution to this process, which should not be exaggerated.
