Abstract
Introduction. The issues of the state and development of the infrastructure of the cultural sphere of Mordovia in the second half of the 20th century are insufficiently studied. In this regard, the purpose of the article is to study the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the activities of cultural and educational institutions of Mordovia in the 1950s and 1980s. Using the example of libraries, clubs, cultural centers, the state of the material and technical base is considered, the organization of cultural and mass work and the activities of amateur performances are also presented.
Materials and methods. The work is based on archival files, scientific publications, statistical materials and collections of documents. The fundamental basis of this research is the principle of historicism. The methodological foundation of the work consists of general scientific and special historical methods.
Results and discussion. The infrastructure of the cultural sphere of Mordovia at the time under review had a dual character. On the one hand, there have been certain achievements in the development of a network of cultural and educational institutions and amateur performances. On the other hand, the construction of cultural institutions had shortcomings in financing, in terms of amounts and deadlines.
Conclusion. These materials allow us to trace the trend of an increase in the number of cultural institutions, but they were not enough to develop the spiritual life of the region inhabitants.
