Abstract

Introduction. The article presents the results of work on the study of the state and problems of the development of theatrical culture in the Republic of Mordovia during the crisis stages of the countryʼs history — the years of perestroika and the post-Soviet period. The features of state management of the cultural sphere are revealed, organizational, economic and legal aspects of the functioning of republican theaters are considered, changes in the repertoire are traced, the main problems of the period are noted. They are: insufficient funding, weakening of audience interest, artistic searches for national identity in the stage repertoire. The role of the theater in the spiritual life of the region is determined.

Materials and methods. The basis of the research source base was the documents of the Central State Archive of the Republic of Mordovia (funds of the Council of Ministers — the Government of the MSSR, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Mordovia and the Union of Theatrical Figures of the Republic of Mordovia). The information presented in the interactive content of regional theaters (information about the history, personalities, repertoire) was also studied. The basis of the methodology of cognition was a systematic integrated approach. Comparative historical, retrospective and statistical research methods were used in the research presented.

Results and discussion. Under the conditions of the reform of Soviet society in Mordovia, the pressure of political control over culture did not weaken. It was only in the late 1980s that there were trends towards liberalization and de-ideologization, which were replaced in the early 1990s by the discriminatory attitude of regional authorities towards the cultural sphere. Transformations in the management system were inconsistently reflected in the activities of republican theaters. On the one hand, there has been a qualitative change in the content of the repertoire, associated with the abolition of censorship and the independence of the choice of productions and its interpretation. On the other hand, there were problems of loss of viewers and underfunding. Despite the difficulties of the post-Soviet period, new names, iconic productions appeared in the theatrical life of the republic, interest in revealing the national theme was expressed; new theatrical organizations, both professional and amateur ones, arose; touring and festival activities were in progress.

Conclusion. The mid1980s — 1990s was a difficult and controversial period in the life of republican theaters, after which the scenic art of the region gained a recognizable national flavor and expanded the boundaries of its creativity.
