Introduction. Pre-revolutionary historiography of law enforcement activities of noble elected officials in Russia in the first half of the 19th century is clearly not sufficiently covered in modern science. Therefore, addressing this issue is undoubtedly relevant. In addition to scientific interest, this topic is also of practical interest. Studying the experience of involving the population in maintaining public safety is very much in demand in the context of reforming law enforcement structures and local governments. In addition, the study allows us to look at the aspect under study through the “prism of a close historical perspective”, through the eyes of authors who lived during the era of the Russian Empire.
Materials and methods. The following methods were used during the study: comparative historical, historical genetic, structural and functional, system analysis.
Results and discussion. In pre-revolutionary historiography, various aspects of the problems of law enforcement activities of noble elected officials in the first half of the XIX century were studied by M. T. Yablochkov, A. V. Romanovich-Slavatinsky, S. A. Korf, A. D. Gradovsky, N. V. Varadinov, the issue was indirectly addressed in the works of P. A. Kashkarov, L. M. Savelov, V. M. Gribovsky, A. V. Lokhvitsky, I. E. Andreevsky, V. V. Ivanovsky. The main advantage of these works is the accumulation of rich factual material, their typical drawback is the use of a limited range of sources in the work and attempts to make a theory.
Conclusion. Publications of 1870s — 1917 on the issue we are studying were studies that mainly analyzed the legislation regulating the work of noble societies. The noble corporations and their representatives were described by these authors as the support of the throne, faithful servants of the emperor, who acted successfully in all areas entrusted to them by the supreme power.
